Trading time in Hell for a Mac
I’m being chastised plenty by the loyal, but I want a Mac in the worst way. I’ve been a PC man my whole life, but both Microsoft and the open source community are having trouble competing with the sexiness of Mac. Ok, ok, open source isn’t even in the game. After spending last weekend with the band and sitting alone on my PC while they all played bluetooth tag with their PowerMacs and MacBooks, I know what I need to do.
I should be on the road right now, making musical fusion with the band. Last weekend was our third gig together ever (though each of us had played Katie’s songs many times previously–just not together in this combination)–so I guess what I’m saying is, it was my third time playing with the band. But save for the first time, we just clicked. It’s as if we’ve been playing together for years (though admittedly, some of them have). So when the band left for Florida and I left for Wisconsin and home after the “UP mini-tour” (the tour through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan–the kickoff of the spring tour), I should have cried, but because I’m a man and just bottle it up, I got sick and stayed home from work all week instead.
This gave me plenty of time to think about how much I need a Mac. I was looking for any way to get my hands on the $3k that I’ll need to get the Mac I want. Fortunately since my credit is already DESTROYED because of the last time I bought a computer (which I put on the “Dell Preferred Account”–not a recommended practice at 28% interest), I can’t get any credit from anyone. So…I’ll need to pay for this in ca$h.
I have $400 in the bank currently. I get paid on Friday, of which I’m safe using $600 of. Also on Friday my tax refund comes in for $1300. So I’m up to $2300. If I’m really lucky and the refurb bank is refilled at Apple, I could get a refurbished 15″ MacBook Pro for $1999 or so and then add on the AppleCare for $350. I probably won’t be lucky, though, and I’ll need to cough up $2990.40 after tax for a new one. That leaves a difference of $690.40 that I need to find yet. I don’t know how I’m gonna do it…
BUT I NEED A MAC!
The sad part about it is that in buying a Mac right now, I’m extending my sentence in the cubicle. $3k amounts to two extra months in the brig. Is it worth it? Well, I don’t think I can actually be part of the band unless I have a Mac–so yes, it is.
UPDATE: I bought it! The tax returns all came in as fast or faster than expected _and_ there was a refurb machine with the exact specs I wanted in stock! So…thanks to the Apple refurb shop and the student discounts, I saved $600. For $2.5k I managed to get the machine that I wanted with AppleCare (which was going to cost me $3k), a case, a USB keyboard and Parallels desktop. Awesome.
Oh yeah, and it’s already in Fedex’s hands. I’ll be holding it buy the end of the day Monday. Sweet.
Nice work…and congratulations. I’m officially slightly jealous from a certain point of view, though certainly not covetous nor discontented.
I’ll just stick with nice work…and congratulations.
